Piano and Cello Teacher - Chicago, IL - North City
Hello! My name is Desiree Miller and I have been teaching private and group music classes for 17 years in a variety of places. From my beginnings in Milwaukee, WI, where I earned a Bachelor of FIne Arts while holding down a full studio of both cello and piano students to now, in the Chicagoland area, I can say that I am comfortable teaching as young as 3 years old to adult. I firmly believe that anyone at any age can learn an instrument and build a love for making music. A little more about myself - I have both a Masters in Cello Performance and a Masters in Pedagogy (Teaching) from Ohio University. During my time at Ohio University, I had the opportunity to be a teaching assistant for music education undergraduate students in a lower strings methods course, as well as traveling to Port-au-Prince, Haiti to teach and perform for Haitian music students as a music outreach. in 2009, I attended the University of Cincinnati - Conservatory, earning an Artist Diploma in cello performance. During my studies in Cincinnati, I was able to travel to Spoleto, Italy to collaborate with Italian musicians to create weekly chamber music concerts. In 2011, I got accepted into the Civic Orchestra of Chicago and since then, have been living, teaching and gigging throughout the Chicagoland area.
What I love about teaching is the joy I get from seeing my students get better and find a source of happiness that only music can provide. I feel that not only do my students learn from me and from all my past experiences, but that I learn just as much from my students. I recognize that everyone is different and learns differently. My approach to teaching is to be as sensitive as I can to my students' capabilities and perspectives to create a safe and open learning space for both of us to grow. Being raised from a classical background, I do insist on learning good technique so that this can lead my students to have the skill to translate their technique to all genres of music.
I love that in Chicago, I get to play classical music one day, then musical theatre the next, then pop music or jazz after that - variety is the spice of life! I can't wait to show more people that learning an instrument opens you up to a world beyond what merely watching and listening to music can give you.
