BIO: My name is Igor and I’m a jazz saxophonist, composer, and bandleader based in Brooklyn, New York. I began my professional training at the Bruckner Conservatory in Linz, Austria, where I studied with Doug Hammond. During this period, I was a member of Munich-based band Sidewinders, winner of the “Best Jazz Group of Germany” award. After completing my studies with honors, I was invited by one of the world’s finest bassists, Reggie Workman, to study at the New School University in New York City. In 2000, I moved to New York and trained with noted jazz masters George Garzone, Reggie Workman, Buster Williams, and Chico Hamilton. In April 2002, I was selected for the New School All-Star Wayne Shorter Ensemble, which performed at the “Beacons in Jazz” award ceremony at the Supper club, where Mr. Shorter was honored. I have appeared at jazz festivals in Vancouver, Munich, Ljubljana, Belgrade, Novi Sad, Csfero, at major jazz clubs in New York including the Jazz Standard, Cornelia Street Cafe, Nublu, Birdland, 55 Bar, Smalls and venues all over the world with such jazz legends as Reggie Workman, John Abercrombie, Chico Hamilton and Doug Hammond.
My music is inspired by folkloric melodies from the Balkan region—well known for its angularity and unique rhythmic pulsations—and integrates rhythms and patterns from the African American culture, as well as chamber music and contemporary jazz.
My work with Innertextures has formed the heart of my career.L ast album, “I Am The Spirit of The Earth”, reflects both my Slovenian roots and Brooklyn journey. My group Innertextures has released five albums: “I Am the Spirit of The Earth” (2022), Eleven (2018), “Innertextures live” (2012), “Mineral Mind” (2009), and “Innertextures” (2004).
My greatest passion is for teaching, saxophone, improvisation, chord theory and composition.
