Piano & French Horn Lessns with Shane (60 min TRIAL LESSON)

Hi, I'm Shane! I’m a french horn player, composer, and pianist currently based in Los Angeles. I graduated from McGill University Schulich School of Music in 2020, where I received a Bachelor of Music in horn performance. I’m currently pursuing a Master of Music in horn performance at California State University Long Beach. I have performed with orchestras in venues including Carnegie Hall, Walt Disney Concert Hall and Place Des Arts, with renowned musicians including Kent Nagano, James Conlon, and Marc-André Hamelin. During my time at McGill I also studied music theory and composition and was the official tutor for one of the university’s advanced music theory courses. I have also studied Alexander Technique and Body Mapping and believe somatic education is an important part of learning to use our bodies well while playing, as well as avoiding and recovering from injuries.

I grew up in Los Angles and started playing the horn in School when I was 13. I went on to attend Los Angeles County High School for the Arts, and perform with orchestras all over Los Angeles including the American Youth Symphony, and Debut Symphony Orchestra. In 2016 I was a Grand Prize Finalist of the Spotlight Music Center Awards and performed as a soloist at Walt Disney Concert Hall. I also studied at the Colburn School from 2013 - 2015 and performed as a soloist with the Colburn Youth Orchestra in 2015. My primary teachers have been Annie Bosler, Denys Derome (associate principal horn of the Montreal Symphony), and Dylan Skye-Hart (principal horn of the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra).

Whether I’m teaching horn, piano or composition I strongly believe in helping students learn to play the music they feel passionate about. I incorporate somatic education to help students learn to play with freedom and use their body well. I also believe in the importance of establishing a solid foundation in aural skills and music theory.

For those looking to study composition or music theory, I have studied: renaissance and baroque counterpoint, basso continuo, 18th and 19th century harmony, tonal composition, post-tonal music theory, as well as 20th century and contemporary composition strategies. I also play guitar for fun and love songwriting and popular music genres.
